WOODY WEEDS MEASUREMENTS

Woody weed species ≥1 cm DBH within each plot are identified, mapped, and measured. Woody weeds are measured within size catagories (1-2 cm, 2-3 cm, 3-4 cm, 4-5 cm) up to 5 cm DBH.  Woody weeds >5 cm are measured to the nearest millimeter. Woody weeds to measured at Palamanui: Leucaena leucocephala, Grevillea robusta, and Schinus terebinthifolius. Woody weeds at Laupahoehoe: Fraxinus uhdei, Psidium cattleianum, and Rubus ellipticus.

WEED REMOVAL

After cover estimates and woody weed measurements are complete, invasive weeds will be removed using hand pulling and/or herbicide as appropriate.  We record the presence of any new weeds within plots, along trails, and near plot boundaries.

PREVENT THE TRANSPORT OF ALIEN SPECIES INTO THE HETF

  • Vehicles are washed regularly, especially after access to weedy sites and prior to travel to more pristine sites.
  • Shoe and gear is cleaned regularly, especially after access to weedy sites and prior to travel to more pristine sites.
  • Monitoring of invasive species in the HETF.
  • Common entry points for alien species (i.e. road sides, parking areas, and trails) will be monitored regularly.
  • Any alien introductions will be eradicated with the most effective and safeguarded means.
